Season one of Gilmore Girls, an American dramedy television series, began airing on October 5, 2000 on the WB television network. The season concluded on May 10, 2001, after 21 episodes.
The season was released on DVD as a six disc boxed set under the title of Gilmore Girls: The Complete First Season on May 4, 2004 by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.[1]

The initial season had eight major roles getting star billing. Lauren Graham portrayed Lorelai Gilmore, the mother of Lorelai (Rory) Gilmore (portrayed by Alexis Bledel) and the manager of a small inn named the Independence Inn. Melissa McCarthy portrayed Sookie St. James, best friend of Lorelai Gilmore and the chef at the Independence Inn. Keiko Agena portrayed Lane Kim, best friend of Rory Gilmore. Yanic Truesdale portrayed Michel Gerard, a french concierge at the Independence Inn. Scott Patterson portrayed Luke Danes, owner of Luke's Diner where Lorelai and Rory go to eat. Kelly Bishop and Edward Herrmann portrayed Emily and Richard Gilmore (respectively), parents to Lorelai Gilmore and grandparents to Rory Gilmore.

Season 1 follows Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore in their town Stars Hollow. Lorelai deals with her family problems and her love life with Max Medina, while Rory deals with the ins and outs of first loves and how to survive in a new school. In the pilot Rory is accepted into an elite prep school (Chilton), Lorelai then has to deal with the large fee associated with Rory's attendance there. Lorelai then has to go to her parents (Emily and Richard Gilmore) for the money, Emily makes a deal with Lorelai, in which Lorelai and Rory have to attend Friday night dinner at Emily and Richards to pay off Lorelai's loan.
The season was produced by Warner Bros., Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino and was aired on the WB Network in the U.S. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who acted as an executive producer. Sherman-Palladino served as the seasons show runner.

The DVD release of season one was released after the season has completed broadcast on television. It has been released in Regions 1, 2 and 4.
